Geeze. We've been hearing rumors for several years now. Some of the bonfire boasting emanated from well-connected dirt bikers and others from pro riders and even a few factory mechanics. But finally in the 2009 model year, we are greeted with yet the same old air-cooled iron sled. While the reliability of the big bore Honda XR650L is a tough bike to beat, many were hoping for far more from factory Honda. Building the bike strictly by rumor, one might at least expect a supermoto-inspired machine. Even with an air-cooled powerplant, the new skin might be considered cool. But mind you, these rumors were the least enthusiastic of the lot. And after the emergence of the world economic situation, these rumors seemed far more viable than the longstanding version of what the 650L would become. Essentially, from as far back as maybe 2005, the new dual sport bike would be built upon the mighty water-cooled XR650R powerplant and blessed with the CRF name. This fantasy would earn the name of its little sister, the CRF230L. The mighty big bore street legal dirt bike would be called the CRF650L.
