As 2009 model year vehicles arrive in local Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep showrooms, customers will be pleased to find that fuel economy has increased on 19 of Chrysler LLC's car, truck and SUV models, representing 73 percent of the entire product lineup. American consumers could see savings of as much as 6.7 million gallons of fuel per year with the 2009 fuel economy improvements. “Chrysler is committed to improving fuel economy for our customers, and we consistently look at viable technologies to help us achieve that goal,” said Bob Lee, Vice-President – Powertrain Product Team. “With offerings such as our Multi-displacement System (MDS), Active Transfer Case and Front-axle Disconnect, we are able to deliver consumers fuel economy improvements in a majority of our 2009 models.”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety this week revised its crash test rating of the 2008 Jeep Patriot, upgrading the frontal crash test result to “Good,” the institute’s top rating. In addition to the top rating for frontal protection, the 2008 Jeep Patriot equipped with available front torso airbags also was rated “Good” for side impact protection and “Acceptable” for rear crash protection. Jeep Patriot was among eight small SUVs rated in an August 20, 2008, press release from the Institute. On Wednesday, the Institute revised its web site, stating that the dummy was not properly calibrated during the test and giving the Patriot the highest crash test rating for frontal protection.

 The first Jeep vehicle with three rows of seats to carry seven passengers now features an available 5.7-Liter HEMI engine capable of 357 horsepower (266 kW) and 389 lb.-ft. (527 N•m) of torque. 2009 Jeep Commander customers now can visit more places and enjoy their “go-anywhere, do-anything” lifestyles with a HEMI under the hood, and they’ll enjoy better fuel economy, too. The 2009 Jeep Commander’s new 5.7-liter HEMI engine provides better fuel economy, improved idle quality and overall refinement, along with an 8.2 percent increase in horsepower and a 3.7 percent increase in torque compared with the previous generation engine. The HEMI’s new Variable Valve Timing (VVT) improves fuel economy in two ways. First, it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event.

During the third annual Camp Jeep New York, the Jeep brand raised
$16,470 for the "Tigers Forever" initiative, a Panthera project in
collaboration with the New York based Wildlife Conservation Society.
The goal of the project is to increase the number of tigers in key
areas of the world by 50 percent over the next decade.

 Seventy years after the first man climbed the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salado in Chile, two Jeep 4X4 Wrangler Unlimited JK off-road vehicles set a new world record by climbing 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) to the volcano's rim. The achievement, certified by Guinness World Records, is not one that is likely to easily be beaten. Others tried, but only the "go anywhere, do anything" Jeep off-road vehicles could make it to the top of the volcano. It is the second highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere (6,892 meters / 22,597 feet), and now dubbed the "highest parking lot in the world". Jeep parking only, of course. Over five exhausting days in March, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK vehicles carried a team from Extrem Events (Germany), led by Mattias Jeschke, from the base of the inhospitable volcano in the Chilean Andes to the highest point that a four-wheeled vehicle has traveled.
